Automotive Diagnostics and Vehicle Components – Part 1

During a tune-up, typically an engine diagnostic test is performed to determine what adjustments and repairs may be needed by the engine. This diagnostic test, also called a scope test, is needed when there is a noticeable worsening of your vehicle’s fuel economy, the check engine light is activated, or the engine is running roughly. The test will usually include inspecting the following items below:

  • Charging system
  • Ignition System
  • Engine computer system
  • Air conditioning system

Warning Lights

Diagnostic testing is also required when a warning light advises you that a key component of your car is not running properly based on data sent by sensors to your vehicle’s computer. If you are driving and see an activated warning light on your dashboard, you should take your vehicle to a service facility for an inspection as soon as possible. This will avoid further damage and more expensive repairs.

Charging System

The charging system is a crucial component of a vehicle’s electrical system because it provides the electricity for lights, heating, A/C, engine electrical systems, and other parts that require electrical current. The system also keeps the car’s battery charged.

A vehicle’s charging system is comprised of the following three chief components: 1) alternator, 2) voltage regulator, and 3) battery. Typically driven by a belt connected to the crankshaft, the alternator generates electricity that provides the current that powers all the vehicle’s components and recharges its battery.

Part 2 will discuss the Ignition System and Air Conditioning System of your vehicle.
