Using Tax Deductions for 2017 Vehicle Expenses – Part 1

mechanic, cars, Auto AlignmentsExpenses from operating a vehicle can only be deducted when you are driving for a particular purpose, such as business, medical, charity, and relocation. The deduction will depend on the total mileage driven for any of these purposes that are tax deductible.

Business

Driving from your job to a different work site or to attend a business or client meeting is considered a business purpose. However, the drive from home to your job is not considered by the IRS as a business purpose, but merely commuting. If you have a home office and drive to a client meeting or a location for business, the trip is tax deductible.

There are three different IRS forms for claiming deductions for business purposes. If you are self-employed, use Schedule C. Farmers should use Schedule F. Employees who have business expenses that were not reimbursed by their employers should use Form 2106.

Medical

When you drive to get essential medical care for dependents or for yourself, it is tax deductible. As advised by the IRS, use Schedule A to deduct the cost as a portion of your itemized medical expenses.

Moving

As a portion of a moving expense deduction, expenses from driving your car for moving to a new home is tax deductible if it meets certain conditions. First, your move must be related to work reasons. Second, the new home to work travel distance must be a minimum of 50 miles greater than the distance between your previous home to work commute. You must also have worked for the new employer for a minimum of 39 weeks during the 12-month period after moving. Use Form 3903 to obtain this deduction if you qualify.

Charity

The costs of driving your car are tax deductible if you are serving a charity. Examples are working as a volunteer for a hospital, church, or charitable organization. Use Schedule A to get this deduction in the section for charitable donations.

Part 2 will cover the differences between deducting actual expenses and claiming the standard mileage rates for tax deductions. Remember to consult a tax professional if you are unsure if you are eligible for these deductions.

Three Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Your Favorite Car Lover

car repair, maintenance, Car shopThey love you, and they also really love their cars. You’re jealous, but Valentine’s Day is an annual event celebrating unconditional love. If the way to his or her heart is through a car, you will take that path. Anyway, a gift for their car will make them happy, and it will also be practical. Besides, you want your Valentine’s Day date ride to look the best it can be. The following are three Valentine gift ideas for the one you love, who also happens to love a car.

Car Wash & Detail

The winter has been long, and it has been tough on your loved one’s vehicle. Grime and salt thrown up from slushy roads has roughed up the car’s paint job and started to corrode its undercarriage. Washing the car yourself on a driveway won’t do the job. It will be awfully tough to reach every nook and cranny underneath that may be covered with dried up mud, so we recommend buying a gift certificate for a professional car wash as well as a detail. The interior has also received a beating from the elements. The car will sparkle and be squeaky clean both inside and out, and your significant other will be proud to take you out to dinner in his ride for your Valentine’s Day date.

Oil Service

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your car’s engine, and your loved one may have been putting this important service off for a while and it’s now overdue. For critical engine lubrication and protection, clean engine oil and a new oil filter are essentials. Many independent car facilities offer gift certificates offering this service, and so you can give this very important service as a wonderful Valentine’s Day present to your most favorite person.

New Tires

A wet and cold winter has been rough on your significant other’s ride. The cold, salt, snow, sleet, and potholes have taken their toll. If you notice that the tire’s treads have also been worn down from commutes and errands, it’s probably time for the penny test. All you have to do is insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, the tread depth is less than 2/32 inch and time to get new tires.

If they are snow tires, they will need to be swapped out for all seasons, so this would be a great time to treat your loved one with you new tires. You will also help ensure his or her safety. By the way, many local independent services offer professional tire services.

Cabin Air Filters Make Breathing Easy

car services, car mechanic,Annapolis MDA standard feature of vehicles since 2000, a cabin air filter cleanses air before it enters the interior from the ventilation, air conditioning, and heating systems. The filters trap airborne material, such as dust, pollutants, and pollen, which would make breathing unhealthy, especially for those with respiratory issues or allergies.

Mechanics have found that many drivers are unaware that their vehicles have a cabin air filter. Its proper maintenance will make sure that the driver and passengers breathe cleaner air. This service also helps prevent damage and extensive repairs because the air conditioning system of a car would be forced to work much harder if the cabin air filter were clogged.

Symptoms

A symptom indicating a new cabin air filter is needed is the reduction of air flowing from the car’s climate control system. Perhaps setting the fan at its highest output does little to increase flow, and an unusual amount of noise is generated. Foul odor entering the interior from the vents is also another sign. If the length of service of a cabin air filer has been significant, it may be astonishing to discover the extent soot, particles, and grime coating the surface facing the incoming air.

Cabin Air Filter Locations

Cabin air filters are typically positioned behind the glove compartment, and certified mechanic will be able to gain access by releasing the compartment from its fasteners. He or she must take care of the pins and clips that may secure the filter in place. Other common locations for the cabin air filter are beneath the dashboard or hood, which will be more difficult to each.

Replacement

Manufacturers’ recommendations for the replacement of the cabin air filter vary with each vehicle, but the typical interval is every 15,000 or 30,000 miles. The frequency required may be affected by how often you drive and your region. Commuting regularly in city traffic or driving through desert areas may demand more frequent replacements. In any event, the cabin air filter should be replaced annually. However, confirm the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual.

Radiator Maintenance & Repair Basics – Part 1

Car Repair Shop,Annapolis MDEssentially, a car radiator prevents the overheating of an engine. As a running engine generates very high temperatures, coolant is needed to run through it to aid in the removal of excess heat. Afterwards, this liquid passes through the radiator for cooling, and then it is re-circulated through the engine for the repetition of the heat removal process.

There are two tanks within the radiator connected with tubes made of aluminum or brass. When the coolant runs through these tubes, a thermostat activates the radiator fan, which blows air over them for lowering of temperature. Typically, these tanks are manufactured from plastic, and so they can crack, leaking coolant. When this occurs, there’s a likelihood of an engine overheating and being damaged.

Also commonplace, the clogging of a radiator will restrict the adequate flow of coolant running through the engine. If not addressed, this condition will worsen and eventually lead to the overheating of the engine and result in damage.

Benefits of Healthy Radiator

Aside from preventing damage, a healthy car radiator provides several benefits, including good engine condition over its lifetime. A good radiator also ensures that the water pump has the lubrication and protection it requires. When properly cooled, an engine will operate optimally. The heater core, which allows interior car heating, will be protected. A healthy radiator will also prevent winter freezing or summer overheating of an engine. There will also be a decrease in engine corrosion. The chances of a blown head gasket will also be greatly reduced.

Regular Maintenance

A radiator will be kept in good shape by performing the regular maintenance recommended by the manufacturer. Ensuring proper coolant level is important. A radiator flush at the scheduled intervals will remove contaminants and build up in the system. Servicing the radiator is much cheaper than replacing one.

Part 2 will discuss radiator replacement.

Safe Winter Driving Tips

Tune-up ,Engine Repair ,Annapolis MDSnow, sleet, and ice are on their way, and you may need the following safe driving tips when Old Man Winter arrives. On top of driving safely, it would be wise take your vehicle to a reputable and reliable service facility and have a certified mechanic inspect it to make sure your car is ready for the toughest season for driving.

Visibility, Speed and Knowledge

Visibility is critical in winter conditions, so clear the ice and snow from lights, windows, hood, and roof before getting on the road. Keep your eyes on the road, staying alert and avoiding distractions. Look farther into traffic than normal, and you will be alerted to potential problems faster.

Remember to drive only as fast as the conditions safely permit. The posted speed limits are for dry pavement, so you should drive slower in wintry conditions.

Before driving, check the current road conditions of your route. For the state of Maryland, call 511 from your cell phone or dial 1-855-GOMD511 (1-855-466-3511) from any phone. You can also visit www.MD511.org

Braking, Surfaces and Cruise Control

Use brakes carefully, early, and properly. Always leave plenty of room for stopping safely. In adverse conditions, more time and distance will be needed to stop safely, so use the two-second following rule.

Due to more air exposure, the surfaces of bridge decks ice up before their approach roads will. Entrance and exit ramps pose a greater challenge during winters because of less application of anti-icing material than the main line.

Do not employ cruise control in wintry conditions. Roads that appear dry and clear can suddenly become slippery or icy. Tapping brakes to deactivate cruise control may lead to loss of control.

4X4 Overconfidence

Overconfidence due to driving a 4×4 vehicle is dangerous during winter. Although providing more traction, most four-wheel drive vehicles weigh more than cars and take more time to stop.

Heavy Vehicles

Heavy vehicles, such as trucks, require more time to respond and stop safely, and so avoid darting quickly in ahead of them. For snowplows and maintenance vehicles, drive behind them with a following distance of at least 200 feet and never pass on their right.

Slow Down and Wear Seat Belts

The most important safety tip is to cut your driving speed in winter conditions. Ensure that you and your passengers always wear seat belts. It is the law and may save lives.

How to Avoid Three Common Winter Car Issues

car mechanic, Repair. maintenanceThere are several car problems that usually only occur during the winter season. This season brings freezing temperatures that can severely affect vehicles. Knowing how to address cold weather issues that can affect your car will help you reduce breakdowns and keep you safe when it’s cold.

Fluids at Freezing Temps

When the temperature falls to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below, water begins freezing, making possible the snow, sleet, and ice that make driving tough and even treacherous. Car fluids may are also affected. Make sure your coolant concentration is sufficient for the climate where you live or are traveling. In extremely cold temperatures, motor oil may thicken and won’t flow as fast to engine parts that need lubrication. Winter grade lightweight oil will flow more easily in cold weather. Check your service manual to see if this is an acceptable option for your vehicle.

Batteries in the Cold

A car battery is more susceptible to being drained when temperatures are very cold. During freezing weather, more energy is necessary to start a car. Park inside a garage whenever possible. An old battery approaching the end of its life span will also have a higher likelihood of dying in winter and leaving you stranded. Regular checkups will decrease the probability of a dead battery. When the temperature falls, battery power decreases. To maximize starting power, shut off all accessories such as the radio, heater, and lights before turning on the ignition.

Tire Pressure Drops

Tire pressure is also affected by temperature, and so it is especially critical to take readings during very cold weather. Every 10-degree decrease of temperature will reduce tire pressure by 1 pound. The maintenance of proper tire pressure optimizes fuel consumption and provides better traction, making winter driving safer. All-season tire performance suffers in cold temperatures, and so purchasing winter tires is advisable if you live in a region where temperatures regularly falls below 45 degrees.

Car Maintenance and Repair Under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

Passed in 1975 by the Tune-up, car mechanic, car services U.S. Congress, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (MMWA) is a federal statute that governs warranties on consumer products, including vehicles. As set forth by MMWA, an independent mechanic, a retail chain shop, or even the owner may perform routine maintenance and repairs on a vehicle during the manufacturer’s warranty period.

The law makes it illegal for manufacturers or dealers to void a warranty or deny coverage because someone other than the dealer did the work. However, the manufacturer or dealer may require consumers to use specific repair facilities if services are provided free of charge.

Limitations for Repairs

Under certain situations, a repair may not be covered by the warranty if it were performed by the owner or an alternative dealer service facility. For example, an improperly installed timing belt that damages the engine may allow the manufacturer or dealer to deny responsibility after demonstrating that the faulty installation was the cause. In any case, the warranty would still be in effect for other parts of the car.

Aftermarket or Recycled Parts

Voiding a car warranty because an aftermarket or recycled part was installed is unlawful according to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. However, it is important to note that the dealer or manufacturer may require car owners to use a specific replacement part if it is provided to consumers at no cost under the warranty.

Limitations for Aftermarket or Recycled Parts

If an aftermarket or recycled part were defective or were improperly installed and causes damage to a part covered under the warranty, the dealer or manufacturer may deny coverage for the damaged part and charge for any related repairs. However, the dealer or manufacturer must demonstrate that the aftermarket or recycled part caused the necessary repairs.

Tips for Selecting Snow Tires – Part 2

Auto Repair, car maintenance. Annapolis MDAs winter approaches, it’s the right time to consider shopping for snow tires before driving on hazardous snowy or icy roads. Below is a guide that will provide the basics for selecting snow tires, but it is advisable to talk to a certified mechanic at a trusted service facility. Making the right choices will keep you safe on the road. Below are the last four of eight tips.

Chains vs. Snow Tires

Chains are sometimes required by law for driving on snow or icy roads in mountain areas, so having snow tires on a vehicle will not be sufficient for driving in controlled areas. Chains should be kept in the trunk if you live in a region with winter weather.

Studded of Studless Snow Tires

Studless snow tires will function well on packed or slushy snow. Snow tires provide traction by being built with treads featuring wide, deep grooves with sharp edges and irregular surfaces. This design permits rubber to carve through snow while retaining road contact. However, studded tires will give you the best traction possible even on ice. Lightweight pins arrayed on tread, studs function like snowshoe claws, and they will stick to slick surfaces.

Used Winter Tires

Before buying used winter tires, three important checks are required. One is confirming the tires are the right size as indicated by your vehicle owner’s manual or right current tires’ sidewall. Two is measuring the tread depth using a gauge. New tires usually have 11/32 of an inch in tread depth. If tread depth is 6/32 of an inch or less, the tire will not provide adequate snow performance. Three is looking for uneven tire wear. Driving on tires with uneven wear may be dangerous or even damage your vehicle.

Bottom Line

All-season tires are sometimes advertised as functioning equally well in summer and winter. This may be accurate in Southwest USA, where the climate is mild and dry without drastic changes in season. However, living in a region with severe winter weather calls for using tires marked with Mountain Snowflake for safe driving.

Tips for Selecting Snow Tires – Part 1

car mechanic, car services, Annapolis MDNow that it’s autumn, you should consider buying snow tires before winter sets in and turns driving hazardous. The following is a guide to selecting snow tires, but remember to consult with a certified mechanic at a trusted service facility. Making the right choices will help ensure your safety on the road. Below are the first four of eight tips.

Snow Tires

If you live in a region where winter weather includes ice, sleet, snow, freezing rain, and 40-degree Fahrenheit temperatures or less, snow tires will be needed. Commuting and traveling through mountains or snow zones during colder months will also make snow tires necessary.

M+S Tires

Many all-season tires have a rating of M+S, which means mud and snow. Their tread design will provide improved traction on wet road over tires that are not rated M+S. However, M+S tires aren’t sufficient for winter driving. On icy or sleety roads, they won’t be able to provide the control, traction, and braking capability of a snow tire. For these conditions, buy tires constructed of the right tread and marked with the Mountain Snowflake. This designation indicates that the tires are certified and tested for winter performance.

All Season vs. Snow Tires

Snow tires and all season tires are constructed differently. Winter tires are made with hydrophilic (“water-loving”) rubber, which will remain pliable and soft during winter, allowing it provide better traction in snowy and icy conditions. All-season and summer tires are built with rubber compound that is stiffer, permitting it keep its shape in higher temperatures. Regarding tread design, winter tires also possess a “void-to-lug” ratio that is higher. This means larger grooves between the lugs (blocks of tread). In addition, the tread blocks have edges that are sharp and irregular. Riding over snow, it carves and scoops snow into tire surface voids, and the tire will maintain more constant road contact because tire velocity will also throw snow from grooves.

Siped Tires

The majority of snow tires are siped, meaning they have small patterned slits on the lugs that provide added edges for improved road traction. Increased safety siping can be acquired for an additional fee. The extra traction from custom siping may well be worth the cost if a vehicle will be driven on slick roads regularly because it will improve stopping, rolling, and starting tire performance.
