Exhaust System Functions and Issues – Part 1

car mechanic, Repair, maintenanceThe process that drives an internal combustion engine starts when gas from the vehicle’s tank enters the combustion chamber inside the cylinder head. Next, this fuel is mixed with exterior air that was vented through an air filter. A sparkplug then generates a spark as directed by an electrical system of a distributor cap and wires, igniting the air/fuel mixture and creating a controlled explosion.

Repeated explosions drive a piston up and down within a cylinder, moving a crankshaft that converts the power into a circular motion that drives the transmission and ultimately the wheels. In the meantime, exhaust from the air/fuel mixture’s explosions exits the engine’s combustion chambers.

The exhaust leaves the engine through exhaust manifolds or headers. Every car engine feature several cylinders, and each produces its own exhaust that the exhaust manifold collects. These gases then progress through an exhaust system and enter the tailpipe.

The Catalytic Converter

Prior to leaving the exhaust system, gases undergo an environmentally important process within the catalytic converter, which decreases the volume of pollutants entering the atmosphere. Vehicles generate the most air pollution in the USA, and the Environmental Protection Agency began implementing standards for vehicle emissions and fuel under the Clean Air Act of 1970. As a result, manufacturers began installing catalytic converters in their cars.

Using chemical reactions, a catalytic converter nearly eliminates all toxic gases, such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxide, from exhaust. This is accomplished through a composition of catalytic metals. Rhodium, platinum, and palladium chemically transform exhaust gases into carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and water, drastically reducing pollutants.

Importance of Exhaust System

Insisting on driving a vehicle with a faulty or damaged exhaust system will result in expensive repairs. It is wiser to address an issue as soon as you notice it. Bear in mind that the role of the muffler and exhaust system is much greater than reducing the running noise of a vehicle. Aside from decreasing pollutants and making sure a car is running efficiently, these two components provide an important safety measure by keeping poisonous carbon monoxide from accumulating within a passenger cabin.

Part 2 will cover the indicators of a faulty exhaust system.

Why Your Car Needs a Checkup in Spring

car service center, Annapolis MDWinters can be tough on cars. The season takes its toll on  both  inside and outside of you vehicle. Now that it’s spring, you should address any issues caused by the rough weather. The following are six typical areas that should be looked at during a spring checkup to make sure your vehicle is ready and safe to drive during the warmer weather. We recommend bringing your car to a reputable independent automotive service facility, where an expert certified mechanic can give you a free inspection.

Air Filter

The drastic changes of weather during winter, bringing rain, slush, snow, and mud, have caused more strain on your car’s air filter. It cleans the air that enters the engine area. During winter, its effectiveness can be decreased by high levels of moisture, debris, and dirt caused by bad weather. The air filter should be inspected and replaced if necessary.

Alignment & Suspension

You may get a sensation of the steering wheel pulling in a direction that you do not expect, making it difficult to control your car. Occasionally, the vehicle shakes, causing the unsafe loosening of parts and components and making driving unsafe. Salt and sand used on roads during the winter often damage seals and deteriorate lubrication necessary to maintain the proper functioning of the suspension, which ensures the safe handling of every vehicle.

Brakes

During wintry conditions, especially when it’s icy, brakes can get lots of wear and tear because of situations involving slide-to-stop or hard braking. As a result, it is critical to have your car’s brake components examined by a certified technician. You may already know that brakes are one of the most important safety components of every vehicle. Spring driving can involve driving in heavy rainstorms, when road surfaces can get slippery, so your brakes should get inspected after every winter.

Rims/Wheels

Winter can not only be rough on cars, it also does damage to roads. When your car dips into potholes, it may damage the tire rims/wheels. A certified mechanic who is expert in tire care should take a look if any are bent and require repair or replacement. Tire rims are machined precisely, and a bent rim may cause vibration, especially at higher speeds, and damage to a tire resulting in a flat.

Tires

The beginning of spring is a good time to swap out winter tires for all-seasons or summer tires, depending on your region’s weather. Use this opportunity to ask a technician to inspect both sets of tires for excessive tread wear or cracking. Either set may need replacing, but the process will ensure your driving safety. In addition, you will be ready for both driving during the warm weather and the winter conditions several months ahead.

Wipers

It’s safe to say that all windshield wipers take a beating from snow, ice, sleet, salt, and dirt during the winter. This is all for the sake of maintaining visibility while driving, and this needs to be maintained even in warmer weather. The rubber components of your car’s wipers typically deteriorate significantly due to wintry elements, and they should be replaced as part of regular maintenance after every winter.

Three Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas for Your Favorite Car Lover

car repair, maintenance, Car shopThey love you, and they also really love their cars. You’re jealous, but Valentine’s Day is an annual event celebrating unconditional love. If the way to his or her heart is through a car, you will take that path. Anyway, a gift for their car will make them happy, and it will also be practical. Besides, you want your Valentine’s Day date ride to look the best it can be. The following are three Valentine gift ideas for the one you love, who also happens to love a car.

Car Wash & Detail

The winter has been long, and it has been tough on your loved one’s vehicle. Grime and salt thrown up from slushy roads has roughed up the car’s paint job and started to corrode its undercarriage. Washing the car yourself on a driveway won’t do the job. It will be awfully tough to reach every nook and cranny underneath that may be covered with dried up mud, so we recommend buying a gift certificate for a professional car wash as well as a detail. The interior has also received a beating from the elements. The car will sparkle and be squeaky clean both inside and out, and your significant other will be proud to take you out to dinner in his ride for your Valentine’s Day date.

Oil Service

Engine oil is the lifeblood of your car’s engine, and your loved one may have been putting this important service off for a while and it’s now overdue. For critical engine lubrication and protection, clean engine oil and a new oil filter are essentials. Many independent car facilities offer gift certificates offering this service, and so you can give this very important service as a wonderful Valentine’s Day present to your most favorite person.

New Tires

A wet and cold winter has been rough on your significant other’s ride. The cold, salt, snow, sleet, and potholes have taken their toll. If you notice that the tire’s treads have also been worn down from commutes and errands, it’s probably time for the penny test. All you have to do is insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, the tread depth is less than 2/32 inch and time to get new tires.

If they are snow tires, they will need to be swapped out for all seasons, so this would be a great time to treat your loved one with you new tires. You will also help ensure his or her safety. By the way, many local independent services offer professional tire services.

Top Eight Vehicle Services for New Drivers – Part 1

Import ,Repair, Annapolis MDIf you are a new driver, typically a teenager, you are probably driving a used car. Since it may be several years old and has higher mileage, you will have to work harder to make sure your ride is in good shape. It will be worth it in the long run because you will have a more reliable car. Your hard-earned money should also not be spent on expensive repairs that would not have been necessary if you had done the scheduled or necessary maintenance. Part 1 will cover the first four of the eight most important services for your vehicle.

Air Filter

The air filter cleans the air flowing into an engine of harmful particles. Eventually, the element will be so clogged, there will be a severe reduction of airflow, forcing the engine to work much harder and causing inefficiency that hurts fuel economy.

In addition, particles that are allowed to pass through by the compromised air filter will harm the engine, resulting in repairs and shortened service life. Car makers typically recommend replacing the air filter regular mileage intervals. Check your owners manual for recommendations. also make sure to check for special circumstances. If you drive on dirt roads or in heavy/city traffic often, it is recommended that the air filter be replaced more frequently.

Battery

The lifespan of most car batteries is three to five years. However, service life can be shortened by tough driving conditions and extreme temperatures. When a battery becomes three years of age, start scheduling tests of its charge. Poor results will let you know that the battery is dying and should be replaced. You will avoid being stranded because you are unable to start the car and needing to pay both for a tow and a new battery. Aside from providing dependability, a battery in good condition will allow more efficient functioning of your car. Make sure to unplug battery draining chargers when the vehicle not in use. Just because your device isn’t attached to it, doesn’t mean it’s not still drawing power for your car.

Brake Pads

As brakes are applied, its pads undergo tremendous levels of friction. They are the only barrier separating the braking mechanism from the rotor. Frequent sudden stopping will wear them down more heavily and rapidly, so it is both safer and wiser to begin slowing down well before reaching a stop. Reducing speeds prior to braking will be more fuel efficient and extend the lifespan of brake pads, saving you money.

Once brake pads are very thin, they will may make noise or the low pad warning indicator may come on the dash. This is a sure sign you need new ones as soon as possible. Depending on the make, model and mileage, the rotors may need to be replaced as well.

Hoses & Belts

It is normal that a running engine will generate high temperatures. A vehicle cooling system in good condition will be able to maintaining the proper temperature and prevent overheating. However, as the miles pass, cooling system components will experience normal wear and tear. Hoses and belts will eventually dry, crack, and break. Hoses carry important fluids from part to part. Belts transfer rotational energy from one powered component to another that needs power so it can function. Broken hoses or belts may result in significant engine damage and costly repair services. It is a good idea to ask for an inspection of belts and hoses every time there is a regularly scheduled maintenance.

Part 2 will cover the topics of Oil Services, Spark Plugs, Tires, and Wiper Blades.

Six Typical Fuel Filter Issues of Vehicles

car mechanic, maintenance and repair servicesListed below are some of the typical vehicle issues that involve the fuel filter. A cartridge on the fuel line, the fuel filter removes particles from gas before it enters the engine. As it filters impurities from the fuel, the filter becomes increasingly dirty and eventually clogged to the point it will not be able to work properly. A compromised fuel filter will affect the general performance of the car, resulting in undesired, costly, and occasionally hazardous issues. If any of the below apply to your vehicle, call your trusted certified mechanic for an inspection right away.

Starting Disabled

When the clogging of the fuel filter is so serious that it totally blocks the flow of gas into the engine, a vehicle will basically be disabled from starting. Keep in mind that an automobile will only be able to start when fuel is provided to the engine for ignition.

Hard Starting

In circumstances where the filter is partially clogged, a small amount of fuel will be permitted to flow into the engine. However, it will be much harder to get the engine to start. An issue like this should be fixed at the earliest opportunity because it may later result in very costly problems.

Rough Idling

Rough idling can result from excessive engine combustion because of a faulty or extremely dirty filter impeding necessary fuel flow and preventing the correct fuel/air mixture.

Hesitation

A dirty fuel filter can cause engine hesitation because it only permits a small amount of fuel to flow into the engine. This issue becomes most apparent when you are trying to accelerate a vehicle from a dead stop.

Stalling

When a fuel filter is in such a poor condition that it causes engine stalling, it is due to inconsistent fuel flow. Occasionally, a sufficient amount of fuel will be provided for the normal operation of the engine. However, there will be other instances when the fuel flow is reduced so much that the car’s engine shuts down. The seriousness of the issue will depend on the kind of debris trapped by the filter, the condition and capability of the fuel pump.

Erratic Performance

A vehicle with a dirty filter will sometimes function quite well at highway speeds, but then it will hesitate while running at low speeds. This can be explained by the varying pressures provided by the fuel pump. At high speeds, the fuel pump will deliver more pressure, allowing fuel to flow through a dirty filter and into the engine, permitting the proper functioning of the car. Unfortunately, when a vehicle is operating at low speeds, pressure will not be sufficient for providing the needed volume of gas, resulting in erratic engine performance.

Cabin Air Filters Make Breathing Easy

car services, car mechanic,Annapolis MDA standard feature of vehicles since 2000, a cabin air filter cleanses air before it enters the interior from the ventilation, air conditioning, and heating systems. The filters trap airborne material, such as dust, pollutants, and pollen, which would make breathing unhealthy, especially for those with respiratory issues or allergies.

Mechanics have found that many drivers are unaware that their vehicles have a cabin air filter. Its proper maintenance will make sure that the driver and passengers breathe cleaner air. This service also helps prevent damage and extensive repairs because the air conditioning system of a car would be forced to work much harder if the cabin air filter were clogged.

Symptoms

A symptom indicating a new cabin air filter is needed is the reduction of air flowing from the car’s climate control system. Perhaps setting the fan at its highest output does little to increase flow, and an unusual amount of noise is generated. Foul odor entering the interior from the vents is also another sign. If the length of service of a cabin air filer has been significant, it may be astonishing to discover the extent soot, particles, and grime coating the surface facing the incoming air.

Cabin Air Filter Locations

Cabin air filters are typically positioned behind the glove compartment, and certified mechanic will be able to gain access by releasing the compartment from its fasteners. He or she must take care of the pins and clips that may secure the filter in place. Other common locations for the cabin air filter are beneath the dashboard or hood, which will be more difficult to each.

Replacement

Manufacturers’ recommendations for the replacement of the cabin air filter vary with each vehicle, but the typical interval is every 15,000 or 30,000 miles. The frequency required may be affected by how often you drive and your region. Commuting regularly in city traffic or driving through desert areas may demand more frequent replacements. In any event, the cabin air filter should be replaced annually. However, confirm the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual.

Clean Your Car’s Fuel System for Better Performance

Dealer, Import ,Repair AnnapolisFor better performance and mileage from your car, get its fuel system cleaned right away. Interconnected, the fuel pump, filter, and injectors can suffer from clogging because of debris and dirt. The good news is that a fuel injector cleaner can address this and other harmful buildup in the fuel system.

Working in unison, a fuel filter, pump and injectors ensure fuel is transported from the tank to injectors, atomizing properly at the correct air/fuel mixture for optimal combustion that will power a car. However, a clogged fuel system may damage other portions of the engine, hurting fuel consumption and performance. Without regular fuel system maintenance, there will be a complete shutdown of the engine.

Certified mechanics and service facilities strongly advise having a fuel system cleaning service every year, or what is recommended by the manufacturer of your vehicle in the owner’s manual.

Fuel System Cleaning Process

Typically, a fuel system cleaning service consists of the 8 procedures below.

1)    A cleansing the fuel system from the fuel tank with the additions of a premium formula fuel system cleaner.

2)    A cleaning of the fuel injectors or carburetor, along with the intake valves and combustion chambers, with a fuel system cleaner.

3)    The utilization of fuel system cleaner for purging any water from the fuel system.

4)    The lubrication of engine injectors, valves, cylinders, and rings.

5)    The removal of dirt, varnish, carbon, as well as other deposits from the throttle plate and body.

6)    The lubrication of the throttle body and its moving parts by using a corrosion inhibitor for the prevention of scoring and deposit buildup in the future.

7)    The dissolving of deposits on the intake manifold, runners, valves, and combustion chambers by using a two-stage intake deposit cleaner.

8)    The deposit of residual engine cleaner for the softening of hard carbon deposits and reduction of buildup within the catalytic convertor.
